Lewis Steele Provides the Latest on Alisson Becker’s Future at Liverpool

Alisson Becker’s future was one of the biggest topics on Anfield Index’s Media Matters, with Dave Davis asking Lewis Steele whether he was “bringing good news” after fresh suggestions that Liverpool want the Brazilian goalkeeper to stay. The answer was cautious, qualified, but ultimately positive for Liverpool supporters.

Steele’s key line was clear: “I think as it stands, people are planning for him to stay.” That matters because Alisson’s position has been surrounded by Juventus rumours, injury concerns and the wider leadership gap Liverpool face after a difficult season.

Liverpool planning for Alisson stay

Steele was careful not to present the situation as closed. He added “the caveat that we’re only in May and there’s still three months left of the window”. Still, his reading was that “it feels like Liverpool are sort of confident that they can get him to stay”.

That confidence is important because Alisson is not merely another senior player. In the same conversation, Steele described him as a figure who “remains as important as ever to Liverpool”. He acknowledged the worry that Alisson “does miss 10 to 20 games a season”, but still called it “almost a risk worth taking for a player that elevates you so highly when he’s on the pitch”.

That is the Alisson equation in one sentence. He has injury issues, but his level remains elite.

Juventus interest has not gone away

The Liverpool position does not remove outside pressure. Steele said: “That doesn’t change the fact that Juventus want him.” He also made clear that “ultimately Allison could say, ‘I’m sorry, but I’m going.’”

Yet, when asked to lean one way, Steele gave a telling answer: “If you had to put your money either way, I would probably put it on him to stay now.”

That is not a guarantee, and Steele repeatedly stressed that “it’s a fluid situation and it could change”. Even so, this sounded less like a player already edging towards the exit and more like one Liverpool believe they can retain for at least another year.

Leadership makes decision even bigger

Liverpool’s summer is already heavy with change. Steele noted that with “Robo and Salah leaving”, losing Alisson as well “would leave a huge leadership void behind”.

That point may be decisive. Liverpool need performance, but they also need authority, presence and dressing room stability. Alisson offers all three. Steele said Alisson has “got a contract till the end of next season”, having “triggered the one year” extension around two months earlier.

His proposed solution was direct: “Liverpool should be just saying to him, please just give us one more year and then we’ll let you go.” Steele called that “the best situation for all parties”.

Body language points towards remaining

Steele also offered an interesting observation from the final day. Before the match, he watched Alisson during the warm ups and saw him put his hands to his chest and “pulls out the badge”. Steele admitted he tweeted about it and then deleted it because people began asking “what does this mean”.

His interpretation was simple. “What I took from it is that’s not a man that’s going,” he said.

He also looked at Alisson’s behaviour at full time, saying that if the goalkeeper “knew in his heart of hearts that he was going”, he would have been “more emotional and more animated”.
