The Tractor Boys sealed a top two spot in the Championship on the final day of the campaign, winning comfortably at home against QPR in front of a packed crowd.

Kieran McKenna will be aiming to improve the first team squad over the summer, with the Suffolk outfit hoping to establish the club in the top flight long-term.

One player that has been linked with a move back to Portman Road is Liam Delap, who departed Ipswich for Chelsea last summer.

The striker has struggled for form at Stamford Bridge, but he contributed 12 goals and two assists in the league last season.

Here we use estimated figures from Capology to see how much Delap has earned per week since making the switch to Chelsea…

Delap made the switch to Chelsea last summer in a deal worth a reported £30 million from Portman Road.

The striker had been a standout performer as Ipswich suffered relegation to the Championship, coming 19th in the table.

This led to a lot of interest in his services, and ultimately a move to the London outfit, where he has struggled for form and consistent minutes.

As part of his move to the Blues, he agreed terms on a deal worth £100,000 per week, making him as well paid as Levi Colwill and Mykhailo Mudryk.

The 23-year-old is paid half the amount that the best paid player in Chelsea’s first team squad is, with Wesley Fofana and Reece James both making £200,000-a-week.

Other high earners at Chelsea include Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella, who receive £180,000 and £175,000 per week, respectively.

Delap is paid better per week than the likes of Robert Sanchez (£60,000) and Benoit Badiashile (£90,000).

Ipswich don’t pay any player anywhere close to the £100,000 per week that Delap is earning at Chelsea.

So the club will either need to alter their wage structure significantly in order to lure him back, or else a big pay cut will need to be taken.

Dara O’Shea and Leif Davis are the best paid members of McKenna’s first team, with the pair both receiving £35,000-a-week.

Ashley Young earned £30,000 per week last season before announcing his retirement, with Azor Matusiwa and Ben Johnson also receiving the same figure.

If Ipswich are going to be competitive in the Premier League next season, then they must be willing to offer higher salaries to prospective signings.

However, the £100,000-a-week mark may still prove too high, even if the club decides to let loose with the purse strings a little bit.

The Tractor Boys earned 22 points during the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, and they will need to improve the squad to ensure they better that total next year, if they’re to survive in the division.

Ipswich also face competition from the likes of Newcastle United and Everton in the race to sign Delap, so it could prove quite tough to bring him back to the club in the summer.
