Liechtenstein team news

Liechtenstein arrive without suspended defender Jens Hofer, who serves a one-match ban for accumulated yellow cards. Experienced midfielder Nicolas Hasler wears the captain’s armband for his 108th international appearance, leading a team ranked 206th globally. The 34-year-old has skippered Liechtenstein since 2021 and will be instrumental in their efforts to frustrate Wales.

Benjamin Büchel continues in goal despite the relentless barrage his team faces. The 35-year-old was named Liechtenstein Footballer of the Year three consecutive times (2022, 2023, 2024), pulling off spectacular saves against Wales in June, including a wonderful one-handed save and a brilliant stop from an Ethan Ampadu overhead kick. In attack, Ferhat Saglam, Dennis Salanovic and Willy Pizzi will lead Liechtenstein’s quest for a goal in the group as they are yet to find the back of the net in this qualifying campaign.

Wales team news

Wales will be without Ben Davies for the clash in Vaduz, with the Tottenham player sidelined by a hamstring injury sustained during his 100th international appearance against Belgium in October. The 32-year-old’s absence is a significant blow for Bellamy’s defensive setup, compounded by injuries to Ben Cabango and Aaron Ramsey’s withdrawal from the squad.

Leeds United midfielder Ethan Ampadu will captain the side; the 25-year-old has worn the armband for his club since July 2024. Joe Rodon will provide defensive stability, with the Leeds player establishing himself as one of the Whites’ most consistent performers. Rodon scored his first international goal in Wales’ 3-0 victory over Liechtenstein in June and added another against Belgium last month.

Dan James has returned from an ankle injury after missing the last camp. Harry Wilson, who scored in the June reverse fixture, is available for selection. Brennan Johnson, the Tottenham forward who scored the Europa League final winner, provides attacking firepower, while Mark Harris and Nathan Broadhead compete for the striking role.

Craig Bellamy has emphasised his full commitment to Wales’ qualification, dismissing speculation surrounding the Celtic vacancy and insisting he remains focused on guiding the Dragons through the World Cup play-offs in March and towards Euro 2028.

Form

Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein are already mathematically eliminated, sitting bottom of Group J with zero points from six matches. Their June meeting with Wales resulted in a 3-0 defeat at the Cardiff City Stadium, with goals from Rodon, Wilson and Kieffer Moore securing a convincing victory. They have lost all four competitive meetings with Wales without scoring.

Wales

Wales are coming off the back of three straight defeats. Their most recent loss came against Belgium in October, when they conceded four goals despite a spirited display and taking the lead through Rodon. They also lost to England at Wembley and Canada at home in international friendlies.

The Dragons sit third in Group J with 10 points from six matches, and victory in Vaduz followed by success against North Macedonia would guarantee second place and a home semi-final in the play-offs. Saturday’s fixture is absolutely pivotal for their qualification pathway.

Predicted lineups

Liechtenstein: Buchel; Malin, Meier, Goppel; N. Hasler, Luchinger, Sele, A. Hasler, Zund; Salanovic, Saglam

Wales: Darlow; Mepham, Rodon, Lawlor; Thomas, Ampadu, Cullen, Williams; Wilson, Johnson; Harris
