The Federacion Mexicana de Futbol Asociacion launched the first professional competition in 1943, creating Liga Mayor with 10 teams in a single-table set-up. In 1970, hosting the World Cup prompted further structural change.

From 1996 the calendar was split into two tournaments, initially Invierno and Verano, now known as Apertura and Clausura.

The Liguilla has varied, but currently a qualifying round sees teams ranked fifth through 12th play a single match at the higher seed. Those four winners join the top four seeds in the quarter-finals, with victors progressing through to decide the champion.

Historic clubs and fierce rivalries keep Liga MX among the most compelling competitions in the Americas, with its honours list still growing.
