FC Bayern are working behind the scenes on a little race against time. Manuel Neuer has been missing since last weekend with a fibre tear in his left calf – but a lightning comeback for the upcoming top match at Borussia Dortmund does not seem out of the question. The only question is: How sensible would a risk really be?
Just a week ago, the captain was injured in the away game in Bremen and had to be substituted at half-time. As usual, the record champions were reluctant to give any details. The official announcement only mentioned a „temporary“ absence. A fibre tear of this type is generally expected to take around three weeks
Internally, however, there was apparently a preferred date early on: the classic in Dortmund. And this objective has apparently not changed
After the 3-2 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt, sporting director Max Eberl commented on Neuer’s personnel. „Manuel was very happy today. He’s very positive and we’ll see what happens from day to day,“ explained the 52-year-old. A call-up to BVB is still not ruled out
From a tactical point of view, it makes perfect sense to keep this option open for as long as possible. The opponent should not know early on what constellation to expect. It is also undisputed that with Neuer between the posts, Munich’s play often appears calmer and more structured. His presence, communication and experience give the defence additional stability
The Frankfurt game provided an example of this: when the second goal was conceded, Joshua Kimmich decided against a possible pass to Jonas Urbig in extreme pressure and instead opted for a risky ball across the penalty area. A scene that raised questions to say the least

However, Eberl did not want to reduce the situation to a lack of confidence in the young substitute keeper. „Let’s leave the discussion now, shall we?“ he replied, slightly irritated, when asked whether Kimmich would have played the ball differently with Neuer
In fact, Urbig has given no cause for criticism so far. When he has had to deputise for Neuer, he has performed his duties solidly, with no major slip-ups. The eight-point lead over the first-placed team also ensures calmness ahead of the clash in Dortmund
This is precisely why the crucial question arises: Does Neuer have to return in the classic? Or would it be wiser not to take any risks and give him the time he needs to fully recover?
A lightning comeback is possible, but whether it will ultimately be necessary remains to be seen.
