Former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton heaped praise on Rovers after their 3-1 win against Cardiff

After a convincing 3-1 win away to Cardiff City on Saturday, former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton gave his former employers the ultimate compliments when comparing them to Brazil.

That was in reference to Rovers scoring two fantastic team goals in South Wales, both of which were rounded off by Andi Weimann, who helped Blackburn to a first away league win of the season, with Lewis Baker scoring the other.

It was a much-needed win for Blackburn as it snapped a three-match losing run in the league which threatened to derail their promotion hopes, and although they still reside outside the play-offs, they've at least stayed in touch.

Promotion certainly wasn't an ambition they had in mind back on opening night in August when they welcomed Derby, but some smart recruitment coupled with some savvy management has them fighting in the top half.

Sutton was particularly impressed with Rovers today on Sky Sports punditry duties, and he took to X (formerly Twitter) to make a sweeping statement about his former side's performance today.

It's not every week John Eustace teams get compared to the great Brazil sides, but today they were by Sutton, who was mesmerised by the football Rovers played leading up to their first and second goals.

It was the first goal which truly had shades of Brazil, as a fantastic team goal consisting of 42 passes was finished off by Weimann, and although the second wasn't quite preceded by as many passes, it was still an excellent goal.

Weimann described the first as the "perfect team goal" after the game, but Sutton went one step further with his assessment.

The former Blackburn man took to X to give his thoughts after the first-half, claiming: "Blackburn Rovers like Brazil today. Two superbly worked goals," and on the evidence it's hard to disagree with his verdict.

Although his comparison to Brazil is a little tongue-in-cheek, Sutton, who won the Premier League with Blackburn in his playing days, certainly can't be accused of bias as they certainly were two superbly worked goals.

Blackburn proved they can be serious promotion contenders

It's long-since been a case of always the bridesmaid never the bride for Blackburn, who have largely been in and around the play-off picture over the last few years, but always faded away.

They faded so badly last season that they even ended up in a relegation battle, so the challenge for Eustace now is to find a level of consistency which keeps them in and around the top six.

Victory over Cardiff was a great start to doing just that as it was their first away league win of the season and snapped a four-game goalless streak, but they still have plenty to prove.

Eustace inherited a bit of a mess last season left behind by Jon Dahl Tomasson, so he'll hope their fortunes this season can be much better, and with games against promotion-chasing Leeds and Middlesbrough to come shortly after the international break, we'll soon have a better idea of where they're at.

To win either of those games, they may just need another Brazil-esque performance, although on a day when Eustace was linked to the vacant Coventry job, the performance could yet be deemed untimely.
