In the world of Lionel Messi, historic milestones are typically accompanied by victory, but events at Chase Stadium in the early hours of Thursday provided a rare, sombre exception.

While the Argentine maestro reached the remarkable milestone of 900 career goals, his Inter Miami side saw their continental dreams evaporate, crashing out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup at the hands of a disciplined Nashville SC.

The evening could not have started more perfectly for the South Florida faithful. In the seventh minute, the stadium erupted as Messi etched his name into the record books yet again.

With that goal, Messi became only the second male player in history to reach 900 official career goals, joining his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the 900 club.

Remarkably, Messi reached the milestone in 1,142 matches, nearly 100 fewer than Ronaldo required to hit the same mark in 2024.

The early 1-0 lead seemingly put Miami in the driver’s seat after a scoreless first leg in Tennessee. However, the Herons’ defensive vulnerabilities eventually proved costly.

A chaotic sequence in the Miami box saw a poor clearance fall to Cristian Espinoza, who hammered a volley home to level the match at 1-1 with 16 minutes remaining.

Under the competition’s away-goals rule, the equation shifted instantly with Inter Miami now needing an outright win to advance. Despite late substitutions that saw Luis Suarez and David Ayala enter the fray, Javier Mascherano’s side could not find the second goal.

As the final whistle confirmed a 1-1 aggregate draw, it was Nashville who celebrated a place in the quarter-finals.

With little time to dwell on their continental disappointment, Inter Miami are back in Major League Soccer action on Sunday against New York City FC.
