Lionel Messi marked the opening of Inter Miami’s new stadium with a goal in the 2-2 draw against Austin FC on Saturday.
The Argentine became the first scorer for the Major League Soccer side at their new ground, taking his career tally to 903 goals.
It was a special occasion for Miami fans as the club’s 26,000-capacity Nu Stadium opened.
The home crowd were stunned by Guilherme Biro, who fired the opener after only six minutes. He headed home Facundo Torres’ cross to put his team 1-0 ahead.
Miami quickly responded, as Messi levelled the scores with a brilliant header in the 11th minute.
The Herons dominated possession and created several chances, but Austin held on to keep the score level until half-time.
The visitors then took a shock lead in the 54th minute through substitute Jayden Nelson, who finished brilliantly after being sent clean through on goal by Myrto Uzuni.
Javier Mascherano introduced Luis Suarez off the bench as the hosts tried desperately to get back in the game.
Mascherano’s call had the desired effect as the veteran striker prodded home from close range in the 83rd minute.
Suarez thought he had scored a dramatic winner when he hit the target once again, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Miami will now return to action next weekend when they welcome the New York Red Bulls to the Nu Stadium.
