Liverpool are close to a signing in Arne Slot’s backroom staff who is about to take the Reds to an even higher level.

It feels like this summer is the summer when the Arne Slot and Richard Hughes era really begins at Anfield.

Last summer, Liverpool opted not to make a move, keeping their cards close to their chest.

Which meant last season was a write off. There were no expectations on Slot. It was merely an opportunity for him to assess the level of his squad.

And he might have been surprised to find that the level was even higher than perhaps anyone had envisaged with Liverpool storming all the way to the league title.

That has given Richard Hughes an easy pitch for prospective new arrivals. He’s just about to secure the services of Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez to this winning formula.

And that is just the beginning. Liverpool are also making important backroom appointments behind the scenes.

The most notable one is Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The Times has reported that the Dutchman is expected to be appointed as an assistant coach to replace Johnny Heitinga who has joined Ajax as their new manager.

It’s a surprise move, and not one many saw coming.

In Van Bronckhorst Liverpool are appointing someone with a proven track record in management.

Like Slot he won the Eredivisie league title with Feyenoord, and he did one better guiding them to a Europa League final as well.

After that Van Bronckhorst has managed at Rangers and Besiktas as well.

He’ll be stepping down in this role at Liverpool and bringing in someone of his pedigree is already a huge boost.

It’s an even more encouraging sign for Liverpool’s full-backs, who Van Bronckhorst could take to another level.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona man was a full-back himself during his playing career which saw him lift the Champions League title back in 2006.

Van Bronckhorst was known in his prime as an attacking full-back who totalled 75 goals for club and country.

In his managerial career, Van Bronckhorst has developed a special track record bringing the best out of his full-backs in particular.

This started at Feyenoord with Rick Karsdorp who provided 18 goals and assists in two seasons under Van Bronckhorst before earning a mega move to AS Roma.

Now at Manchester United, Tyrell Malacia played some of his best football under Van Bronckhorst as well. Being a key pillar in his title winning campaign.

At Rangers, he got the best out of James Tavernier who made 36 goal contributions in 64 matches under him from full-back.

Meanwhile, Borna Barisic also thrived under Van Bronckhorst and the Dutchman also did wonders to revive the career of Calvin Bassey - often deploying him as a full-back to brilliant effect.

It’s been a short career for Van Bronckhorst as a manager but already he’s been proven to really bring the best out of his full-backs.

Now at Liverpool, he’ll be working alongside the likes of Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong and potentially Milos Kerkez as well.

With Van Bronckhorst’s past, it’s easy to predict that just like his former full-backs the aforementioned trio will also take on another level next season.
