Manchester United and Liverpool are set to suffer disappointment in their bid to sign Alphonso Davies with the defender on the verge of signing a new contract at Bayern Munich.
Davies has emerged as one of 2025’s most high-profile free agents having entered the final season of his deal with Bayern. The Canada international is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides and has been linked with Real Madrid and Premier League clubs.
Manchester United and Liverpool are each understood to have monitored his situation. However, Davies is now nearing a new deal in Germany. The player’s agent, Nick Huoseh, is in Munich for talks this week with discussions described by Sky Germany as at the final stages.
Davies has made 216 appearances for Bayern since signing for the Bundesliga side from Vancouver Whitecaps. He has won five Bundesliga titles and the Champions League among his honours, while cementing a reputation as one of the world’s leading left-backs.
Ruben Amorim has made the signing of a left-back his priority at Manchester United, while Liverpool looked at Davies as a potential long-term successor to Andy Robertson. Real Madrid have also chased a deal to sign the Canadian, as the Spaniards look to land another big-name free agent.
Having signed the likes of David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and Kylian Mbappe on Bosman deals in recent windows, Real Madrid had targeted a double deal for Davies and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold to overhaul their full-back roles.
