Arne Slot didn’t mince his words. While Arsène Wenger recently claimed that Liverpool’s coach had “destroyed” the Reds’ midfield by bringing in Florian Wirtz, the Dutchman responded firmly in his press conference. Clearly irritated, he made it clear that managing a team is about much more than the theories of outside observers.

A blunt clarification

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and plenty of people have one. That’s the beauty of football,” he said with a touch of irony.

“If I need open heart surgery, I’m not going to tell the surgeon how to do his job. In football, everyone thinks they know better than you,” he added.

A polite but pointed dig at the legendary French coach.

Slot also seized the moment to defend Florian Wirtz, who has been at the center of debate since his move to Liverpool. The former Bayer Leverkusen player, sometimes deployed on the left flank, remains, according to his coach, a key piece of the project:

“I think we have five or six midfielders who can play together. Florian still needs to adapt, but he’ll get there, whether it’s now or later.”
