Swede struck down with yet another issue as World Cup place under threat

Arne Slot has revealed there is ‘a chance’ Alexander Isak will play in Liverpool’s final match of the Premier League season after he missed Friday’s defeat by Aston Villa with yet another injury.

Isak has endured a challenging first season on Merseyside. He arrived from Newcastle lacking match fitness after missing pre-season, and suffered several injuries in the first half of the season.

He then broke his leg in a December defeat of Tottenham, leaving him sidelined for a matter of months.

The striker returned in early April, but missed Friday’s trip to Villa Park with another minor issue.

Slot said he was left in Liverpool out of an abundance of caution, but confirmed his involvement in Liverpool’s season finale against Brentford is not certain.

Asked on Friday if Isak would be able to feature against the Bees, Slot said: “Yes, there will definitely be a chance. He missed pre-season as we all know and then he broke his leg.

“We've tried to be as careful as we could with him, taking into account that our other No9 Hugo Ekitike is out for such a long time, so we needed him as a result of that even more.

“We've tried to be as careful as we could, but I don't think it can come to anyone as a surprise if you miss your pre-season, if you then break your leg, that minor injuries can occur if you have to start in Premier League games immediately in that intensity.

Isak has been named to Sweden’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, but his persistent fitness problems could put his involvement in the United States under threat, with the tournament kicking off in less than a month.
