Liverpool are confident of beating Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday due to the recent form of Hugo Ekitike, according to the Independent journalist Miguel Delaney.

He claimed in his ‘Inside Football’ bi-weekly newsletter today that Liverpool believe the 23-year-old has reached another level in recent weeks.

They lost 3-0 the last time they met Man City, but Arne Slot and his men fancy their chances of picking up three points this weekend.

“Opposition sides are now fully aware of how assistant Pep Lijnders’ shift to a more intense pressing style has left City vulnerable late in games,” Delaney wrote in his newsletter.

“Liverpool have consequently been working out how Hugo Ekitike can exploit that space in the final stages. The club believes the sleek forward has reached another level in recent weeks – precisely why they were so keen to sign him.

“There is a sense he could become one of the best strikers in the world. That progress is also tied to Liverpool’s own confidence, which is far higher than when City beat them 3-0 in November – and even higher than just two weeks ago.”

They signed the Frenchman in a deal that could be worth £82.4 million when add-ons are triggered, and he has proven himself with 15 goals and four assists in 32 appearances.

Ekitike has been involved in ten goals in his last ten games for Liverpool and could be crucial to their chances of beating Man City.

The Etihad Stadium club have run out of steam towards the end of their recent matches, and Liverpool could exploit that weakness.

A win will boost their chances of finishing in the top four, and the Reds are expected to give their all from start to finish on Sunday.

Liverpool will need to be perfect at both ends of the pitch if they want all three points against City, and Ekitike and his teammates will be raring to go.
