Liverpool could finally be edging closer to their dream midfield signing this summer.
Richard Hughes is expected to prioritise strengthening the midfield during the summer transfer window, but much of Liverpool’s recruitment plans will depend on how the Reds finish the season.
At present, qualification for next season’s Champions League is far from guaranteed. Both Chelsea and Manchester United currently appear to be in stronger positions than Liverpool in the race for a top-four finish.
Where Liverpool ultimately finish, and whether they secure European football, will play a key role in determining the calibre of players the club can attract this summer.
Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool have already drawn up an impressive midfield shortlist, which includes the likes of Warren Zaire-Emery, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Kees Smit, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton.
However, another elite midfielder could also be on his way, someone the Reds have wanted to sign for ages and they finally can.
According to the latest report from Fussballdaten Liverpool are now ready to fight for the signature of Assan Ouedraogo.
The young midfielder is currently out injured but he is seen as one of the emerging forces in European football.
Back when he broke onto the scene as a teenager at Schalke in the 2023/24 season, Liverpool were very keen on bringing him to Anfield.
However, at the time Anfield Watch understands that the club's advances were kindly rejected as the player preferred to continue his development in Germany.
Ultimately, he chose RB Leipzig, where Ouedraogo has showcased his exciting quality albeit very briefly.
In just 621 minutes, he has three goals and four assists for Leipzig, averaging a goal or assist every 88 minutes. Now if that's not confirmation that he's ready to join Liverpool, then his debut for Germany's national team should be.
Ouedraogo made his debut for the senior national team against Slovakia, replacing Florian Wirtz, late last year.
And within minutes he found the back of the net with a stunning finish. It was a brilliant statement and a brilliant cameo from the young man.
One that will likely have impressed the club's scouts.
There is no denying that Ouedraogo has a lot of injury problems at the moment, but this is normal. A lot of young players struggle with injuries as their bodies continues to grow. Steven Gerrard was the same.
What's undeniable is the potential that he has.
Still only 19-years-old, he's an exciting young talent who could become exactly what Liverpool need right now and ultimately one of the best midfielders in the world.
Liverpool could not sign him a few years ago, but now they finally can, and they should do everything to win the race for his signature.
He's the dream profile for the club.
