There isn’t much that has gone right for Liverpool so far this season and Höbinger’s injury is the latest loss in a frustrating start to the campaign.

The Reds lost to Manchester City over the weekend as they remained on 0 points after gameweek 6.

Marie Höbinger was withdrawn just 25 minutes into the game with the player leaving the pitch in tears. Liverpool doctors have since confirmed that the midfielder has suffered an ACL injury.

“Marie’s scan results confirmed an injury to her anterior cruciate ligament, and she will now begin a period of rehabilitation with the support of everyone at the club. Said Dr Amelia Woodhouse, LFC club doctor. “She will also have a surgical review in the coming days.”

There is currently no injury timeline for the 24-year-old however most ACL injuries keep players out for at least six months.

In her own official statement, Höbinger said: “Grateful for the best people around me and all the love and support. I am gunna miss you football.”

Höbinger featured in four of Liverpool’s five games this season and she has become a crucial part of the Reds’ midfield since signing from FC Zurich in 2023.

Gareth Taylor: Football can be a cruel game

In an official statement after the confirmation of Höbinger’s injury, Liverpool boss Gareth Taylor offered support to his midfielder.

“Of course we’re all devastated for Marie and football can be a cruel game at times.” Taylor said.

“But everyone here at Melwood – our medical staff, the coaching and backroom team and Marie’s teammates – will all be right behind her and giving her our full support during her rehabilitation programme.

“It’s a tough road back but we will be with her every step of the way and helping her in any way we can.”
