Tuesday afternoon has brought news of a Liverpool approach to Newcastle United regarding Alexander Isak.
The ever reliable David Ornstein from The Athletic has reported (see below) the news, which makes me believe that this is indeed true.
Ornstein says that the Liverpool have; ‘…communicated their interest to do a deal in the region of £120million.’
However, at the same time, the man from The Athletic also states that; ‘The Merseyside club say no formal offer has been submitted as they are well aware Newcastle’s stance has always been that Isak is not for sale.’
I don’t think any of this comes as a huge surprise.
Even whilst winning the Premier League last season, it was universally accepted that Liverpool needed a new first choice striker for the 2025/26 season.
Whilst which club wouldn’t be prepared to pay £12om for Alexander Isak?
Also, Liverpool have already committed to a deal this summer worth a total of £115m for Florian Wirtz.
As David Ornstein indicates, for me anyway, this appears to be an inquiry that Liverpool have wanted to make public BUT know has little (no) chance of succeeding.
Newcastle United are now in their most powerful position, on and off the pitch, since Eddie Howe and the new/current owners came in.
After almost two years of not buying a new first team contender, in order to radically improve the club’s PSR position, Newcastle United now under no pressure whatsoever on that front to sell Alexander Isak, or indeed any other key player.
Whilst revenues at the club are continuing to move in the right direction, including a second Champions League campaign in three years coming up.
Newcastle United with a trophy banked in March and a massive season fast approaching in just over four weeks time, the idea that the Newcastle United owners would be willing to sell their best player to a major rival, would take some believing.
Especially when there is absolutely no contract pressure either, as Alexander Isak still has three years left on his current contract AND it is widely reported Newcastle United looking to agree a new extended and enhanced contract ahead of the new season.
As for Alexander Isak himself, he has given absolutely no encouragement, even the remotest indication, that he wants to leave Newcastle United for Liverpool, or indeed any other club.
You can never say never in football, anything is possible, but I would be astonished if Alexander Isak didn’t kick off the 2025/26 season still playing in black and white.
Even if somebody wanted to believe Alexander Isak could/would move, the idea that it would be for £120m is laughable.
Yes, it is a lot of money, but when you consider Isak’s value to Newcastle United as things currently stand, you have to believe that for sure the previous reports of a £150m+ valuation that NUFC have on Alexander Isak still holds true, IF they were willing to sell.
As for Newcastle United trying to sign Hugo Ekitike, all of the credible NUFC journalists insist that this is with the intention of Ekitike playing WITH Isak for Newcastle United, not instead of.
For me, there are only two possible outcomes here.
Alexander Isak stays at Newcastle United, which I believe to be the case for sure.
Or very unlikely option two, we suddenly find out that Alexander Isak has made clear he wants to leave and Newcastle United sell him for £150m+.
David Ornstein reporting for The Athletic – 15 July 2025:
‘Liverpool have made an approach to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.
The Merseyside club say no formal offer has been submitted as they are well aware Newcastle’s stance has always been that Isak is not for sale.
However, they have communicated their interest to do a deal in the region of £120million.
Liverpool’s admiration for the 25-year-old is long-standing, while Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike has also been among those on their radar. There has been no official contact from Liverpool to Eintracht. Newcastle are working to recruit Ekitike but have yet to reach an agreement with Eintracht or the 23-year-old France youth international.’
