Liverpool have been contacted by a European powerhouse regarding a potential January move for Joe Gomez. According to a report from Anfield Watch. The situation highlights the balance Richard Hughes and the recruitment team must strike between reinforcing the squad and retaining experience during a critical period.

AC Milan came close to securing Gomez on deadline day in the summer. Their approach broke down because of time constraints, with the player unable to undergo a medical before the window closed. That decision proved beneficial to Liverpool given Marc Guehi’s failed transfer and Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending ACL injury.

Milan’s need for defensive reinforcements has not diminished. As reported by MilanLive.it, sporting director Igli Tare has initiated further steps to sign Gomez and has already made contact with Liverpool about a possible January move. The report suggests that Milan could attempt to sign him for as little as €7m, a valuation that feels far below market value for a player with Premier League pedigree and Champions League experience.
Liverpool’s defensive recruitment strategy remains central to this scenario. Anfield Watch stress that everything hinges on a renewed attempt to sign Guehi. If that deal materialises, the pathway for Gomez to depart becomes more realistic.

The England international has been at Anfield since the Brendan Rodgers era and is the club’s longest-serving current player. However, competition for places under Arne Slot has been intense, with Gomez featuring sporadically so far this season.
As the article notes: “It’s a World Cup year, he’ll be wanting to play regularly, and if Guehi or another centre-back comes to Liverpool in January, his chances of playing will be severely restricted.”
Selling Gomez at a cut-price fee in January would raise questions about Liverpool’s approach. While €7m may appeal to Milan, Liverpool would likely demand a significantly higher sum given Gomez’s versatility to play across the backline. His experience and presence in the dressing room remain valuable, particularly as the squad adapts following key injuries.

For Hughes, January could become a defining window. Missing out on Guehi in the summer has already created pressure, and the decision on Gomez may ultimately depend on the success of any incoming defensive deals.
The prospect of losing Joe Gomez in January will raise alarm bells. This is a defender who has given a decade to the club, weathered multiple injury setbacks, and still offers the flexibility to cover both full-back and centre-back roles. In a season where Giovanni Leoni is out with a long-term ACL injury and Ibrahima Konaté’s form has been inconsistent, parting ways with Gomez feels reckless.
The reported €7m figure from Milan looks especially problematic. Fans will rightly argue that Liverpool should not allow an experienced England international, still only in his late twenties, to leave for a fee that does not reflect either his ability or his value in the current market. Centre-backs with Premier League and Champions League experience rarely come cheaply, and losing Gomez at that price would represent poor business.
Supporters will also question the timing. January is a notoriously difficult window to sign quality defenders, and Guehi’s availability is far from certain. Should Palace refuse to sell or demand a prohibitive fee, Liverpool could find themselves short at the back, undermining their push for trophies.
For now, fans will hope Hughes resists Milan’s interest unless Liverpool secure reliable reinforcements. The club cannot afford to weaken defensively mid-season, particularly with European and domestic ambitions at stake. Gomez may not be first choice every week, but in the context of injuries and rotation, he remains a vital squad member.
