Liverpool’s summer transfer plans are beginning to take shape — and Alexander Isak is emerging as a prime target. However, Newcastle United are not going to let their star forward leave without a serious fight.
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Reds have identified the Swedish striker as a top option to replace Darwin Núñez, who could depart Anfield this summer. But Newcastle’s financial demands are expected to be sky-high.
Isak has enjoyed a superb spell in the Premier League since joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad. He has become one of the most clinical finishers in England and recently lifted the Carabao Cup with the Magpies — a moment that marked his growing legacy at St. James’ Park.
The 25-year-old is under a long-term contract, and Newcastle see him as the face of their project moving forward. The club has no interest in selling unless a mammoth offer arrives. The Fichajes report states that Liverpool are fully aware of this and are preparing for a drawn-out battle if they are to pursue the forward seriously.
Arne Slot, who is expected to replace Jurgen Klopp in the Anfield dugout, reportedly sees Isak as a perfect fit for his high-pressing, attacking system. The Swedish international’s movement, finishing, and ability to lead the line make him a highly attractive proposition.
However, Liverpool are not placing all their eggs in one basket. Football Insider reports that the club is also monitoring Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins as a possible alternative. At 29, Watkins would be a more affordable option, especially if Newcastle continue to demand a premium price for Isak.
Watkins has been instrumental in Villa’s rise under Unai Emery, and his performances have not gone unnoticed. Still, Isak remains the priority target due to his age, potential, and already proven Premier League output.
With interest growing, Newcastle hold all the negotiating power. They are not under pressure to sell, and they view Isak as untouchable unless an irresistible offer arrives. The club remains focused on building around the Swede as they prepare for another push at European football.
For Liverpool, landing Alexander Isak will require more than just admiration — it will take a massive financial commitment. Whether they are willing to meet Newcastle’s valuation remains to be seen.
