It’s always strange when a familiar name from our past officially calls time on their career, and now Simon Mignolet has confirmed exactly that.

The former Liverpool goalkeeper will retire at the end of the 2025-26 season, bringing an end to a long and often underappreciated career at the highest level.

Mignolet confirms retirement after successful Brugge spell

Announcing the news via Club Brugge, the Belgian side confirmed the decision and reflected on his achievements since leaving Anfield.

They stated: “At the end of the 2025-2026 season, goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will put an end to his career as a professional footballer.

“Mignolet has played for Blauw-Zwart since August 2019 and already has more than 300 games on his counter at Club Brugge.”

The 37-year-old has enjoyed huge success back in his homeland, winning multiple titles, individual awards and even the Golden Shoe, proving that his level never dropped after departing us.

Mignolet himself also shared a message that perfectly sums up his mentality.

He said: “What I want to promise our supporters is simple: the end result is not completely in my control, but my commitment, willpower and determination will be there every day until my very last moment at Club Brugge.”

That professionalism is exactly what we saw throughout his six years at Anfield, regardless of whether he was first choice or playing a supporting role.

Liverpool career deserves respect despite ups and downs

When the Belgian international arrived from Sunderland in 2013, he stepped into a difficult role replacing Pepe Reina, yet still managed to establish himself as our No.1 during a transitional period.

The shot-stopper made over 200 appearances for us and was part of the squad that lifted the Champions League in 2019, even if his role had changed by that point following the arrival of Alisson.

There were moments of criticism, and even some later comments about his time behind Alisson and some of his teammates raised eyebrows, but his attitude across those years was largely exemplary.

We saw that again in his own words, with the former Red insisting: “This is not the time for extended thanks or emotional retrospectives… because the story is not yet finished.”

That line feels fitting, because Mignolet’s Liverpool story was never about headlines or glamour, but about reliability, resilience and stepping up when we needed him.

As he prepares for his final games in Belgium, he leaves the game as someone who gave everything for every club he represented, including us.
