Third-string goalkeeper Freddie Woodman set to start against Crystal Palace this weekend
Liverpool shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to be back in action sooner than expected after being stretchered off with a ‘big wound’ during Sunday’s Merseyside derby.
The Georgian was carried off after suffering a knee injury in a collision with Beto, leaving third-string goalkeeper Freddie Woodman to deputise.
With Alisson Becker also sidelined, Woodman will continue in his understudy role for the foreseeable future.
Per a report from The Athletic, Mamardashvili’s injury is not as severe as first thought, and he will be back on the grass in two to four weeks.
The 25-year-old has already been discharged from hospital, and is continuing his recovery at home as his team-mate Alisson is closing in on a return from a hamstring injury.
It is hoped the Brazilian will be back in the fold for next month’s visit to Old Trafford, leaving Woodman, a former Liverpool academy player, the most likely option to start as Crystal Palace visit Anfield this weekend.
Woodman’s appearance against Everton was just his second in Liverpool colours, the first coming in October’s 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat by the Eagles.
Mamardashvili issued an update on his condition on Monday, writing on Instagram: “Thank God everything is fine. Thank you all so much for your support and for being by my side. I’ll be back soon.”
Slot added post-match on Sunday: “Is there anything that surprises you when it comes to injuries with us this season? Maybe I already envisaged it because I had two goalkeepers on the bench today, which I normally don’t have but, of course, it has everything to do with the availability of all the other positions.
“Giorgi had to go to hospital with a big wound, so let’s see how he will be. Freddie deserves a lot of credit — coming in just after conceding at 1-1 and their fans were ready for it but he did his job really well.
“He kept calm in a difficult moment when he was doubting whether to catch the ball, yes or no, but kept his nerve.
“He’s worked so hard to have this moment. Usually, third goalkeepers don’t play a lot, but in a season like ours, I think if you are playing in the under-eights at Liverpool, you should be ready for making your debut because it is unbelievable what is happening to us.”
