Liverpool look set to shake up their centre-back options in the upcoming transfer windows.

Having missed out on Marc Guehi last summer, the Premier League champions are somewhat short of senior, fit options.

Arne Slot has only got Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez at his disposal - with Giovanni Leoni laid up for the season having been injured on debut.

There are contract questions to ask over Konate as well - with the Frenchman’s current deal expiring in 2026.

Nico Schlotterbeck a Liverpool target

Factor in that Van Dijk and Gomez are due to leave the club in 2027 and you can see why sporting director Richard Hughes may have central defenders on his wishlist.

The German international, 26, has been at the Westfalenstadion since 2022 - going on to establish himself as one of the finest left-sided centre-backs in the game.

Schlotterbeck’s contract is due to expire in 2027 - and Dortmund have got a big decision looming.

BILD says Schlotterbeck won't renew

They must consider selling their star defender soon or else risk losing him for nothing in around 18 months.

According to a new report in BILD, Schlotterbeck’s fate is sealed and he will not be signing a new deal.

“For months, the club has been fighting to extend the contract of their defensive leader beyond 2027 and has long since submitted an official offer,” the report reads.

“But nothing has come of it. And therefore, I'm making a bold statement: Schlotterbeck will not extend his contract with BVB!”

Dortmund must consider sale

That in turn should open the door for Liverpool to make a bid.

Maybe even a January offer could suit both parties - with Dortmund naturally reluctant to see Schlotterbeck’s value plummet any further as he approaches the final 12 months of his deal.

Liverpool will need to move on from Van Dijk sooner rather than later with Schlotterbeck well placed to take over from the Dutchman in the long term.

Other options reportedly under consideration include Alessandro Bastoni of Inter and Ronald Araujo at Barcelona.
