Liverpool have their eyes firmly peeled on a move for a new defender in the summer.
Initial approaches for Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace were made around taking advantage of a golden opportunity to get one of the best defenders playing in the Premier League for a cut-price deal.

The eventual £35m bid that as made and accepted on deadline day sadly didn't result in the complete of a deal and subsequent reports have suggested that a move in January is not likely.
In effect, this means that Liverpool are willingly entering themselves into a dog fight for the 26-year-old's signature, which likely to be an incredibly competitive race, although the Reds might have just received a boost in their hopes of signing him, with one team now reportedly no longer interested.
According to transfer insider Si Phillips, the Blues were previously looking at signing a centre-back in the summer and since the injury of Levi Colwill, that want has only turned into a need. However, the Eagles' captain is no longer a target because of an understanding within the market.
The latest report said: "There is an awareness within the club that the centre-back position can be improved still, and they are working to try and find [Enzo] Maresca the right profile that he wants.
"Marc Guehi is a player that Chelsea would like to sign, and he is universally like by everyone at the club. However, the club have pretty much walked from that one because he is dead set on joining Liverpool and was never that keen to return to Chelsea anyway."
As such, it appears as though Liverpool's main Premier League rival for Guehi's signature is no longer interested, primarily because of how deep the Reds are into negotiations with him.
