Liverpool are hopeful of having both Alisson Becker and Federico Chiesa back for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Tottenham.

The Reds were without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson for their midweek defeat by Galatasaray in the Champions League last 16 due to an unspecified injury suffered in training on the eve of the first-leg trip.

However, Liverpool boss Arne Slot insisted that the Brazilian’s latest setback was not serious and that there was “definitely a chance” that he could return to face relegation-threatened Spurs, with Giorgi Mamardashvili having deputised for the 1-0 loss in Istanbul on Tuesday night.

Providing a new update on Alisson’s fitness at his pre-Tottenham press conference on Friday, Slot said: “He's been with the physios and with rehab until now.

"We are training today as you know, so let's see if he can join the team session today. That is something I expect but I'm not 100 per cent sure yet because I haven't spoken to him or the medical staff this morning yet.”

Pressed on if he was hopeful that Alisson could play against Spurs, Slot added: “I'm hopeful but that's not to say I'm 100 per cent sure.”

Slot went on to explain how Alisson’s injury occurred and said he would definitely be ready for Wednesday night’s crunch home second leg against Galatasaray, if he misses the visit of Spurs.

“He felt something when he passed the ball in one of his muscles,” Slot added. “But after we checked it, it was so minor that we think it doesn't have to take very long.

“But as always, games follow up so fast that he had to miss the one against Galatasaray, and hopefully he's available and ready for Sunday.

“If not, I'm expecting him – if things go as planned – definitely against Galatasaray."

Liverpool will remain without long-term absentees Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni against Tottenham, but Chiesa should be back in contention after missing the Galatasaray game through illness.

“I expect he feels better now because he felt unwell the day before the game and I think we're now three or four further ahead," Slot said of the Italian forward. “So, I think he's able to train with us today again.”
