Arne Slot has a growing crisis on his hands ahead of Champions League return

Liverpool welcomed Alisson Becker back into their starting lineup over the weekend, but even the return of their first-choice goalkeeper failed to prevent the Reds from succumbing to a heavy defeat at Anfield.

Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest marked a new low in a difficult campaign so far for the reigning Premier League champions, for whom a successful title defence now looks increasingly outside the realms of possibility.

Arne Slot confirmed his squad had suffered a few fresh injuries ahead of their return to action following the November international break, a blow which led to five changes being made to Liverpool’s lineup compared to the XI fielded against Manchester City a fortnight prior.

With PSV Eindhoven coming to visit in the Champions League on Wednesday followed by a trip to West Ham on Sunday, Slot will hope his men can pick themselves up quickly to prevent their current crisis from worsening.

Florian Wirtz

Having endured a slower than expected start to his Liverpool career, Florian Wirtz suffered a “muscular issue” on international duty with Germany that saw him ruled out of the loss to Forest.

Announcing the injury to his summer signing in his pre-match press conference last Friday, Slot did appear optimistic that the former Bayer Leverkusen playmaker would not be sidelined for too long.

“Florian should be able to play after [Forest], it depends on what happens after, but that shouldn’t be that long,” the Liverpool boss claimed.

Whether Wirtz is passed fit in time to face PSV or if he will have to wait until the Hammers trip remains to be seen, but it sounds like the 22-year-old should return at some point in this upcoming week.

Conor Bradley

Another player who picked up a “muscular issue” on national team duty was Conor Bradley.

Having revealed on Friday that the Northern Ireland international had returned to Merseyside with an injury, Slot was pushed for a potential return date and predicted that Bradley would be absent for three weeks.

“I don’t expect Conor to be part of the upcoming 22 days, maybe in the end but not in the upcoming 22 days - unless a miracle happens, which I don’t expect,” Slot said on November 21.

Taking the Liverpool boss at his word, that would potentially rule Bradley out through the Reds’ home clash with Brighton on Saturday, December 13, meaning he may not return until the match at Tottenham the following week.

Jeremie Frimpong

Limping off after just 19 minutes of Liverpool’s 5-1 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt on October 22, Jeremie Frimpong has been out of action ever since.

Initial reports suggested the summer signing was facing up to six weeks on the sidelines, meaning he should be available for selection again during the first week of December.

And after delivering his update on positional rival Bradley, Slot had this to say about a timeline for Frimpong’s return ahead of the Forest game: “Jeremie is out just as long. He’s not probably going to be available in the upcoming two or three weeks as well.

“It’s going to be interesting who all of you want to see as a right full-back.”

Potential return date: December

Giovanni Leoni

Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni remains a long-term absentee, with the young Italian facing a year out of action after suffering a serious knee injury in late September.

The 18-year-old centre-back went down on his first appearance at Anfield against Championship side Southampton in the third round of the Carabao Cup, landing awkwardly following a late challenge in the 2-1 win.

Leoni received treatment on the pitch and was eventually stretchered off, with subsequent tests revealing an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Slot subsequently confirmed that Leoni will be on the sidelines for around a year having torn his ACL.

“He’s not in a good place, of course,” the Liverpool manager said. “He tore his ACL which means that he will be out for around a year.

“Being so young, coming to a new country, playing so well in your first game, it’s very hard to take the positives. You always try to look at the positive side and that is that he is still so young.

“He still has so many years to go after he recovers from a terrible injury like that.”

Potential return date: Late 2026
