Right-back crisis continues despite successful solution in cup victory
Liverpool survived their 3-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion with no fresh injury blows.
Arne Slot has suffered a serious defensive injury crisis in recent weeks, at times having just two - or one - fit, senior centre-backs, and no natural right-back options.
As such, the Dutchman has been forced to field midfielders Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo in that position.
Those decisions have merited mixed results, with Jones and Szoboszlai both scoring in the recent matches against Brighton and Manchester City respectively, but Endo was stretchered off in the 1-0 win over Sunderland last week.
Dutchman Frimpong has struggled with injury since his arrival at Anfield last summer.
The latest setback for the full-back came in the 6-0 win over Qarabag in the Champions League, when he hobbled off early with a muscle injury.
Slot had confirmed after the clash with Man City that the Dutchman would “for sure” be out of the game against Sunderland, and he has continued to be absent since, missing the cup win over Brighton.
"We knew that when he got injured, it was a few weeks.”

Ahead of the Red’s victory against Newcastle, Slot had said that Frimpong’s injury was not as bad as first thought.
“He is out for a few weeks,” the Liverpool boss said at the time. “But [it's] not as bad as we thought he would be out. It's something positive from something not so positive.”
No update was offered after the Sunderland match last week, however, nor the Brighton fixture.
Potential return date: vs West Ham on February 28 (A)
Slot turned to the Japan international to deputise at right-back against Sunderland in Dominik Szoboszlai’s absence, with the Hungarian controversially suspended after his red card against Man City.
Joe Gomez was only fit enough for a place on the bench, so Endo slotted in on the right side of defence.
The 33-year-old was unfortunately stretchered off at the Stadium of Light after making a clearance, landing awkwardly.
He was given an inflatable cast off the field, and Slot feared the worst afterwards.
Speaking post-match, Slot said he expects to be without the versatile squad member for a while.
“His injury doesn’t look good,” the Liverpool boss said. “I expect him to be out, unfortunately, for quite a long time again.”
The exact nature and extent of Endo’s injury, plus a potentially clearer recovery timeline, will likely follow in the coming days or weeks.

The Northern Ireland international was withdrawn during the goalless draw at Arsenal last month.
He will miss the rest of the campaign with a knee injury.
The right-back avoided an ACL tear but needed surgery to repair the ruptured ligaments.
A club statement on the right-back read: “Liverpool FC can confirm Conor Bradley has sustained a significant knee injury.
“The right-back suffered the issue in the latter stages of Thursday night's Premier League fixture away at Arsenal.
“Bradley will undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a period of rehabilitation at the AXA Training Centre.
“No timeframe is being placed on his return to playing at this stage of the process.”
Potential return date: Summer 2026
Record signing Isak suffered a broken leg after opening the scoring in Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Tottenham before Christmas.
The Sweden international has not played since, suffering the injury in a “reckless” challenge from Micky van de Ven, as Arne Slot called it.
Liverpool recently posted pictures of the striker back in individual training, as he was shown practising his ball skills with no cast.
It would be expected, however, for him to be out for quite a while longer yet.
“It's going to be a long injury, for a couple of months,” said Slot at the time of the injury.
The Dutchman does expect Isak to play again this season, but continued: “It's a big disappointment for him and, as a result, for us.”
Potential return date: March 2026
Another summer signing Leoni will not, however, play for his new side again this term after he tore his ACL on his debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup back in September.
The Italian defender is out for around a year.

“He is not in a good place, of course, because he tore his ACL and it means he will be out for around a year,” Slot said of the young centre-back.
“Being so young, coming to a new country and playing so well in your first game, it’s very hard to take the positive side.
“There’s never a positive side but he is still so young so he has many years to go after he recovers from a terrible injury like that.”
Potential return date: September 2026
