Xabi Alonso may not be the club’s first-choice should a new manager be needed
Liverpool have made a significant decision on the future of Arne Slot just days before the Reds return to Premier League action.
Slot is facing huge questions over his future after three defeats on the spin, first against Brighton in the top flight, before Liverpool were demolished by Manchester City in the FA Cup.
A 2-0 win for Paris Saint-Germain, in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, saw Slot try out a five-man defence to no avail.
Following the game, Slot admitted that his tactical switch did not work - adding that PSG could have scored more.
But Liverpool bosses want to keep faith with Slot.
The Telegraph report on Thursday evening, two days before Fulham visit Anfield, that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group want Slot to remain as manager into next season.
Former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso is a free agent, after being sacked by Real Madrid, and has been heavily fancied to replace Slot in the summer.
But, FSG have other ideas.
Instead, The Telegraph report, FSG believes factors such as the tragic death of Diogo Jota last summer and the significant loss of form of the likes of Mohamed Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk has heavily contributed to the club’s struggles this season.
Van Dijk, following defeat to PSG, said it was “an end of an era” at the club, with Salah and Robertson leaving after many trophy-laden seasons.
Club chiefs want to give Slot one more transfer window, his fourth, to make his mark on the squad, with Klopp needing five before finally landing silverware.
Alonso’s reluctance to succeed Klopp in the summer of 2024 is said to have stayed on the mind of those in charge at Liverpool, especially in contrast to Slot’s eagerness to take the role.
