Liverpool may pay a fortune to complete a new signing. The star's wage demands aren't putting them off.

Liverpool will enter the market for a centre-back in 2026. They have to, quite honestly.

Giovanni Leoni's injury leaves them short at the back with only three central options for the rest of the season. That's if Arne Sot is right about the Italian being out for a year.

Anyone who remembers 2020/21 will know that three really isn't enough. Especially when all three options have suffered long-term injuries in the past.

Then there's the issue with Ibrahima Konate's contract. His deal expires in the summer and he's yet to sign a new one.

In fact, suggestions are that he won't re-sign and that the Reds will need to find a replacement. A deal for Marc Guehi - a perfect player to fill that void - collapsed at the end of the summer window.

While that deal might be revitalised, Liverpool will face extra competition. And that's why they're now looking in a different direction.

Liverpool and Dayot Upamecano

Dayot Upamecano, Konate's teammate with the French national team and former teammate with RB Leipzig, is also out of contract in 2026. Liverpool are being linked quite heavily in Germany.

It would be a clever transfer and one that potentially replaces a free transfer with a free transfer. However, that doesn't mean Upamecano would be cheap.

Sportsboom claims Upamecano is chasing massive wages with Bayern Munich. He wants to earn in line with the club's top earners, which is presenting a problem for the Bundesliga champions.
