Liverpool are making a very interesting move to replace Joe Gomez at the club.
It's becoming increasingly obvious that sooner or later the club's longest serving player will have to leave Anfield. Gomez has spent over a decade at Liverpool now.
He arrived while Brendan Rodgers was in charge and had lived through it all becoming a Champions League and Premier League winner.
It's incredible to think that he's still only 28-years-old. Even though he started his career at Charlton, he has just become synonymous with Liverpool.
Sure, he has suffered his fair share of injuries over the years. But when he has played you could never really complain about him. Gomez has always been a solid player.
And in his heyday he was probably the best partner Virgil van Dijk has had in the centre-back position.
But every era must come to an end and as we embark on a Liverpool rebuild Gomez is one player who could be sacrificed.
Liverpool need to put together a backline for the long-term. Gomez was close to leaving the club in the summer, and that remains a possibility. Van Dijk isn't getting any younger and Ibrahima Konate's contract expires at the end of the season.
That leaves just Giovanni Leoni as the only option who will be at the club for the long-term future.
It's something Liverpool need to fix. They need to bed in younger players now so that they can gradually come to understand the requirements at the club, and the standards they have to reach.
Of course, Liverpool need more depth as well. Arne Slot is struggling because he doesn't have a lot of players to choose from.
So a move in January is essential for a centre-back.
