Liverpool are chasing Darwin Nunez 2.0. It comes after a player's sensational 33-goal season put him on the radar.
A South American striker thriving in Liga Portugal? Coming after a great spell in La Liga II with Almeria? Rewind to 2022 and Liverpool were all-in, paying a massive amount of money for the player.
That player was Darwin Nunez, of course, who joined as Liverpool’s next-big-thing but was unable to put it all together at Anfield, even if he won the hearts of the fans.
Well, here we are in 2026 and Liverpool are ready to go again. Correio da Manha reports the Reds have accelerated their interested in Sporting CP striker Luis Suarez - a player who fits the exact same description.
Now, you can certainly question the wisdom of signing a player who’s scoring an incredible amount of goals in Portugal. It didn’t work with Darwin and Arsenal haven’t exactly got a great return on Viktor Gyokeres.
Still, Suarez has scored 33 times already this season and his €80m release clause means he’s absolutely gettable. Time will tell if Liverpool do ultimately try to recreate project Darwin - but this situation is certainly very, very similar.
As of 29 March 2026, Darwin Nunez is in a difficult position at Al-Hilal. Since his 46 million pound move from Liverpool, he has been sidelined from domestic league play to meet foreign player quotas. This has restricted him to AFC Champions League appearances, where he has managed 9 goals this season.
Current Status
He recently returned to action for Uruguay as a substitute against England at Wembley. Due to his lack of consistent minutes in Saudi Arabia, his representatives are reportedly offering him to Premier League clubs like Tottenham and Newcastle for a cut-price fee of around 30 million pounds.
