The Athletic reports that Liverpool are pushing to sign RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida on loan for the remainder of the season.
The Dutch defender is currently on loan at fellow Premier League side Sunderland, but due to Liverpool’s lack of options in defence, they have been searching for a player who can fill the gaps in their backline.
Sky Germany reports that Leipzig are expected to give the green light to allow Geertruida to spend the next six months at Liverpool. However, the reigning Premier League champions will also need to reach an agreement with Sunderland to take over the loan deal.
The 25-year-old has played 17 times for Sunderland this season following his loan move from Leipzig in the summer; however, he has failed to nail down a starting position.
While the defender struggled during his sole season at Leipzig, it was more of a whole club issue as they ended up recording their worst ever Bundesliga league finish last season.
Geertruida offers versatility, being able to play as both a right-back, centre-back and defensive midfielder. The former two positions are where Liverpool are lacking right now.
At Leipzig, the 25-year-old featured predominantly at both centre-back and right-back, but even played two games at left back as well.
