Anfield Watch exclusively revealed that Liverpool wanted to sign Julian Alvarez last summer and they are ready to break their transfer record to sign him again this summer.
As we reported, Liverpool are even open to using Darwin Nunez as part of the deal. Now Atletico Madrid are obviously reticent about letting Alvarez leave considering he just arrived from Manchester City last summer.
But Liverpool are keen and they are going to try to at least make an offer that the Spanish side will consider.
That's because Alvarez pretty much ticks every box for the way Arne Slot wants his team to play. The Argentine is brilliant at both scoring and creating chances for his teammates and he works really hard off the ball.
Don't just take our word for it. Take the words of Thierry Henry, who is probably one of the best forwards to have ever played in the Premier League.
“The most complete striker that I’ve seen recently is Julián Alvarez," Henry said on Stick to Football.
"We've been talking about it. Putting pressure, playing alone, low, whatever you want to do. You see the free kick he scored the other day?
"He can hold the ball alone. He played at the Olympic Games, he played the Copa America, I don't hear him saying I'm tired. Hopefully nothing bad is going to happen to him. And the way he plays it, you know I just like him."
That's a brilliant endorsement for Alvarez and it makes sense why Liverpool would be so keen on signing him. On and off the pitch he seems like the perfect individual.
Liverpool have clearly done their work, scouting him. We don't think they will give up their pursuit just yet. He's very much on the club's agenda this summer.
Richard Hughes will do everything in his power to try and convince him to join the Reds. Whether that will be enough remains to be seen.
