With less than a week of the transfer window remaining, Liverpool’s determination to add Alexander Isak to Arne Slot’s squad is showing no signs of slowing down. The Premier League champions have already strengthened impressively this summer, bringing in Florian Wirtz for £116 million and Hugo Ekitike for £69 million, while Luis Diaz (£65m) and Darwin Nunez (£50m) have departed. The tragic passing of Diogo Jota in July has left both supporters and the club with an emotional gap, but also underlined the importance of ensuring attacking depth.
A move for Isak, expected to be worth in the region of £130 million, would not only be a statement signing, but it would also represent the most ambitious deal in Liverpool’s history. David Lynch, speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, offered a clear sense of where things currently stand.
Lynch explained, “With Isak, the next couple of days could be absolutely crucial.” He added that much depends on Newcastle’s ability to land a replacement striker, saying, “If Newcastle are able to get strikers or even just one striker over the line, then they might just accept selling him.”
Liverpool are understood to have tested the waters with an initial offer, yet patience and timing are everything at this stage. “There’s not very long left. Liverpool are still there and are awaiting encouragement to make that second bid,” Lynch confirmed.
His assessment reflects both optimism and caution, noting, “I still fall on the side of positivity with this because Newcastle aren’t really shutting this down in a firm enough way to make me think that it won’t happen.”
Arne Slot’s debut campaign could hardly have gone better, with Liverpool lifting the Premier League title. However, the manager has been insistent on maintaining attacking balance. Isak’s technical profile, physical presence and proven ability in England make him an ideal fit.
As Lynch put it, “I’d be amazed if the window closes without Liverpool trying again.” This belief is echoed across the fanbase, with many seeing Isak as the perfect blend of elite striker and long-term successor to the club’s great forwards.
Newcastle’s situation remains delicate. “Newcastle do seem to be closing in on a couple of their striker targets but then if they don’t get those done then they could throw their toys out of the pram and say it’s not happening,” Lynch said. They’re currently pushing to sign Wolves’ Jorgen Strand-Larsen and Brentfords Yoanne Wissa before the transfer deadline.
Such uncertainty leaves Liverpool in a waiting game, yet with confidence still alive. “All possibilities are there but the fact that Isak hasn’t been convinced to stay yet, that points towards the deal getting done or at least talks resuming.”
Slot and Liverpool’s hierarchy will be prepared to act quickly once the green light arrives. For now, the club continues to monitor developments closely, knowing these next few days could shape not only the season ahead but also the future of the attack for years to come.
