Robertson Jokes About Puskas After Fortunate Goal in Atletico Clash

Anfield witnessed another dramatic night as Liverpool edged Atletico Madrid 3-2, but it was Andy Robertson who set the tone with an opening goal he was happy to laugh about.

Robertson’s Fortunate Strike

Just four minutes into the Champions League clash, Mohamed Salah’s free-kick took a deflection off Robertson and left Jan Oblak wrong-footed. Speaking afterwards, the vice-captain joked: “I’ve not got a clue! The set-piece coach, for whatever reason, he said I was crucial to set-pieces today so I’ve taken it literally! I was just trying to get in the line of the ’keeper so he couldn’t really see. It’s a great finish, give me the Puskas Award now! [Laughs]”

Robertson admitted he knew little about the goal but was delighted with the early breakthrough. “Obviously I didn’t know much about it but it was a great start.”

Late Drama Once More

Liverpool powered into a two-goal lead as Salah scored soon after, but Atletico fought back through Marcos Llorente. Virgil van Dijk delivered the decisive moment in the 92nd minute, powering home a Dominik Szoboszlai corner in front of the Kop.

Robertson reflected: “We need to maybe get back to winning a bit simpler and a bit easier… when you’re 2-0 up and you’ve played so well in the first half, it should have been a more comfortable night.”

Praise for New Faces

Robertson was full of admiration for Alexander Isak’s debut performance: “I thought he was excellent… especially the first half.” He also highlighted the impact of Hugo Ekitike from the bench, stressing that Liverpool’s new recruits “are the future, they are the ones who are going to take this club forward.”

Leadership and Competition

The Scotland captain, now vice-captain at Liverpool, spoke about competing with Milos Kerkez: “When you’re at a club like Liverpool you expect to be challenged every single season… I love playing with this club, I love being out there with the lads.”
