Gennaro Gattuso has made no secret of his disappointment after confirming that Federico Chiesa once again declined an invitation to join the Italy squad for the November internationals. The Liverpool forward, still searching for rhythm at club level, continues to be absent from Azzurri duty despite Gattuso’s repeated attempts to bring him back into the fold.
The Italy manager revealed that the 28 year old turned down the latest call for World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Norway. Chiesa has not featured for his country since the 2-0 defeat to Switzerland at the European Championships nearly 18 months ago, shortly before his move to Liverpool.
Gattuso explained that the decision rested with the player, and that their dialogue remains regular and respectful. He said, via Mail Sport, “I often talk to him. We have to respect the decisions and problems that each of us has. We know well what we tell each other, and I must respect what the player tells me. I can’t say anything else.” When pressed further, he added, “Yes, it’s already the fourth or fifth time that I’m explaining this.”
Given Chiesa’s pedigree and the national team’s need for attacking depth, his continuing absence is becoming a notable storyline in Italy.

From a Liverpool viewpoint, the situation is intriguing. The Italian forward has enjoyed more involvement under Arne Slot than in his debut campaign, yet he has still made only two starts in the Carabao Cup and accumulated 344 minutes of action in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.
His lack of consistent starts has inevitably prompted speculation in Italy. Reports have suggested that Napoli are monitoring his situation and may consider a move to bring him back to Serie A. With Chiesa at an age where playing time is crucial, such rumours do not seem misplaced, especially with his national team prospects uncertain.
However, it is important to note that his decision to decline the call has not been fully explained publicly. Without clarity on his physical or personal condition, judgement should be reserved. Gattuso’s comments indicate that the player has his reasons, and that the Italy staff are aware of the full context.
For Liverpool, the priority is clear, keeping Chiesa fit, engaged and ready to contribute. Despite his limited minutes, his work rate and commitment have drawn praise from within the club. If he remains healthy and focused, he offers a different attacking profile that could prove valuable as the season progresses.
For Italy, the situation will remain a talking point until Chiesa returns to international duty. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon and qualifying points at stake, Gattuso will hope that the dialogue he mentions leads to a resolution that brings one of Italy’s most talented forwards back into contention.
