Dominik Szoboszlai Contract Ends Real Madrid Talk as Liverpool Midfielder Commits Until 2031

Rumours are cheap. Contracts are not. That is the simple reality around Dominik Szoboszlai after fresh noise linked the Liverpool midfielder with Real Madrid.

Szoboszlai joined Liverpool in the summer of 2023 for £60 million after his release clause was triggered at RB Leipzig. He originally signed a five-year deal through to June 2028. That agreement has now been replaced by a new long-term contract, reportedly running until 2031, and with that comes the clearest possible answer to the transfer gossip.

Szoboszlai contract tells its own story

His agent, Matthias Esterházi, did not dress it up whilst speaking to WinWin Sports. He said: “If you have a player like him, rumors about the big clubs are completely normal. As for his future, only he and I can speak formally. Ultimately, he extended his contract and that says everything about what he wanted to do, because no one forced him to extend the contract.”

That is the point. If a player wants out, he does not sign on for extra years. If he is unsure, he waits. Szoboszlai did neither.

Esterházi went further, making clear that the latest deal should close the conversation around what he called “meaningless rumors”. He added: “That was the player’s wish, and that says everything about what he was also thinking in the last period when everyone was talking about meaningless rumors, so, what happened in the last few days, that’s what Dominik wanted, and that’s clear.”

Real Madrid links carry little weight now

Players at elite clubs get linked with other elite clubs. It fills space and little else. In this case, Liverpool have their answer in writing. Szoboszlai has committed his prime years to the club.

After a demanding 2025/26 campaign and with Hungary failing to qualify for the World Cup, Szoboszlai has at least had some overdue rest before pre-season. He is already part of Liverpool’s 31-man squad in Chicago for the USA tour, with more senior players due to rejoin later. For now, the message is straightforward. Szoboszlai stays, and Liverpool move on.
