Liverpool Fitness Concerns Before Brentford Trip

Liverpool travel to Brentford tonight with fitness questions lingering over several key players. The spotlight is on Alexander Isak after the club’s British record signing was withdrawn at half time during the 5-1 Champions League win at Eintracht Frankfurt. With his fitness still being managed following his £125 million arrival from Newcastle, his availability is uncertain for the Premier League clash in west London.

Isak started alongside fellow summer arrival Hugo Ekitike in Germany, marking their first appearance together. However, Arne Slot revealed the Swedish striker suffered a groin issue and remains doubtful for the Brentford match. “Alex, not too bad. Question mark for the weekend, so let’s see where he is,” Slot said. The Liverpool manager hinted again at the impact of a disrupted pre season and Isak lacking match minutes before joining the club.

Key Selection Calls For Slot

If Isak does not feature, Ekitike is expected to lead the line at the Gtech Community Stadium. Liverpool will be aiming to build on their midweek result, which halted a damaging run of four consecutive defeats. Mohamed Salah could return to the starting XI after being dropped to the bench in Frankfurt, where he only played 16 minutes.

Slot wants Ryan Gravenberch involved again after the midfielder missed the Frankfurt trip due to an ankle problem. The Dutchman said, “He didn’t travel with us [to Frankfurt], so today we are in again, Yesterday we were in as well but we had a day to travel. Let’s see where he is today.” Alexis Mac Allister is expected to start, having returned to action without protective headgear in midweek. Curtis Jones or Dominik Szoboszlai may partner him if Gravenberch is not ready.

Defensive And Goalkeeper Updates

Giorgi Mamardashvili will continue in goal as Alisson Becker remains sidelined. Slot confirmed, “Alisson is not in the squad tomorrow, That’s also going to take a little bit longer.” At right back, Conor Bradley looks set to replace Jeremie Frimpong, who is facing several weeks out with a hamstring injury. “Jeremie is not in a good place,” Slot said, noting the defender will miss this weekend and next week at minimum.

Andy Robertson is likely to retain his starting spot on the left, with Milos Kerkez needing to rediscover consistency. Wataru Endo returned to the squad in midweek, while Giovanni Leoni remains unavailable after ACL surgery.
