Liverpool Women have confirmed that striker Sophie Roman Haug has suffered an ACL injury and will face an extended spell out of action.
The Norway international faces surgery and a lengthy spell out as she joins a growing list of players hit by knee injuries this month, including Bayern Munich’s Lena Oberdorf and Arsenal’s Manuela Zinsberger.
It is the second ACL injury for Liverpool this month alone after Marie Hobinger was ruled out last week.
The Norway international was forced off in the first half of last Thursday’s Subway Women’s League Cup win over Durham.
Scans have since revealed that Sophie Roman Haug has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. She will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and begin rehabilitation at the AXA Melwood Training Centre.
Roman Haug joined Liverpool from AS Roma in 2023 and was instrumental in helping the Reds secure a fourth-place finish in the Barclays Women’s Super League during her debut season. She has already scored twice in the current campaign.
Gareth Taylor expressed his disappointment, telling the club’s website: “Of course, this is the news we didn’t want to hear for Sophie and we are all hugely disappointed for her. It’s a really tough blow following on from the similar news about Marie [Höbinger] last week.
“But the main thing is making sure Sophie has the best of care and everyone at Melwood will be right behind her as she begins her journey back to fitness.”
Roman Haug’s injury comes during a troubling spell for women’s football with a sharp increase in serious knee problems across the sport.
Only last week, teammate Hobinger was ruled out with an ACL injury suffered in Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester City.
For Liverpool the focus right now is on helping Roman Haug through her recovery. Losing both her and Hobinger in such a short space of time is a huge blow but the squad is determined to rally around them. The club has made it clear both players will have every bit of support they need as they work their way back to full fitness.
Elsewhere in Europe, Bayern Munich’s Lena Oberdorf has endured another setback.
The 23-year-old midfielder tore her cruciate ligament in her right knee just one month after returning from an ACL and MCL injury that had already kept her out for over a year. The blow came during Bayern’s 5-1 win over Cologne, when Oberdorf appeared to twist her knee following a collision with Adriana Achcinska.
Bayern’s director of women’s football Bianca Rech said:“This news hits us all very hard and we feel for Lena. She worked tirelessly and with great desire to come back after her first injury. To now face a second such setback is incredibly hard. We are fully by Lena’s side, will support her as best we can in her recovery and be there for her in every way.”
Oberdorf’s recurrence follows several other ACL cases this season. Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger, Lyon’s Liana Joseph and RB Leipzig’s Giovanna Hoffmann have all been sidelined with the same injury in recent weeks.
