Despite signing a new two-year deal prior to his previous contract expiring last summer, the Egypt international has forfeited the final 12 months - valued at around £20million - to be allowed to leave Anfield on a free transfer.

It still remains to be seen what the future holds for Salah amid with a move to the Saudi Pro League, but Liverpool have reportedly started casting their eye over potential replacements.

RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has emerged as a top candidate after rising to prominence with a stellar first season in the Bundesliga, while Anthony Gordon, Jarrod Bowen, Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, and Yankuba Minteh have also been tipped.

Reports in Germany claim Liverpool are willing to spend €200million (£173million) on Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise and Gerrard is of the opinion the Frenchman is the calibre of player his former club must target to replace Salah.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Gerrard said: “You have to buy someone who is box office, or you are not replacing him.

“They have to be top-end, top three (or) four wingers in the world to replace Mo Salah because that’s what Mo has been.”

Taking to Instagram to confirm the surprise exit, Salah wrote: “Hello everyone, unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

“I want to thank everyone who has been part of this club throughout my time here.

“I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me support through the best times of my career and you stood by me in my toughest times. I will never forget.

“Leaving is never easy. I will always be one of you and this club will always be home to me and my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”
