It has been reported that Liverpool are looking at Simons with the club's scouts keeping an eye on a lot of RB Leipzig games this season.
The Reds' interest makes sense given Wirtz is also being looked at as a potential no.10. With Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving, Liverpool need to add creativity to the midfield again.
Signing a right-back is not going to fix the club's problems because of Alexander-Arnold's unique profile. Instead they will have to replace him in the aggregate and that means potentially bringing in a more creative player.
Someone like Wirtz is the best option. But Simons is an exciting alternative with a lot of potential to become even better. Liverpool would struggle to find a better option on the market.
And Romano has confirmed that Simons has made an important decision about his future this summer. Romano says that Simons has decided to leave RB Leipzig in the upcoming window with the player ready to make his next move and that RB Leipzig are aware of his plans.
This is music to Liverpool's ears.
Obviously a move for Simons will hinge on whether Liverpool could pull off an unlikely transfer swoop for Wirtz. But in the case that they miss out on the German international, having Simons available is a nice option.
This season his numbers have been really good for RB Leipzig. He previously struck up a really exciting partnership with Cody Gakpo at PSV and now the Dutch national team.
Reigniting that at Liverpool would be exciting. Perhaps almost as exciting as signing Wirtz.
Although the latter is admittedly more attractive.
