Danny Murphy Urges Liverpool to Chase Luis Enrique as Pressure Builds on Arne Slot

Liverpool’s turbulent campaign has intensified scrutiny around Arne Slot, with former midfielder Danny Murphy insisting the club should pursue Luis Enrique if the opportunity ever arises.

After a season filled with inconsistency, frustration and mounting supporter unrest, the debate surrounding Slot’s future refuses to disappear. Liverpool finished with one of their worst Premier League records in over a decade, suffering 12 league defeats and scraping Champions League qualification with an unexpectedly modest points tally.

While Liverpool’s hierarchy are still backing Slot publicly, Murphy believes the club should think far bigger if they genuinely want to return to Europe’s elite.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Murphy delivered a striking endorsement of Enrique and made clear he sees the Spaniard as the calibre of manager Liverpool should be targeting.

“I would do everything, I would try and break the bank and do anything I can to get Enrique,” Murphy said.

Those comments have fuelled fresh discussion around Liverpool’s long-term direction under Slot, especially as Enrique continues to elevate Paris Saint-Germain into one of the continent’s most formidable sides.

Enrique Style Continues to Impress Across Europe

Enrique’s PSG side have become one of Europe’s dominant forces once again, combining relentless pressing with attacking fluency and tactical flexibility. For many Liverpool supporters, there are clear similarities between PSG’s current identity and the intense football that once electrified Anfield on European nights.

Murphy pointed directly towards that comparison when discussing why Enrique would suit Liverpool.

“They play, if you watch PSG as a Liverpool fan, you’re thinking, ‘that’s how I want us to play’. A bit like Klopp’s team, aren’t they, PSG?” he explained.

That observation cuts to the heart of current frustrations around Slot. Although the Dutchman arrived with an impressive reputation after his work in the Eredivisie, Liverpool’s football has often lacked the intensity, aggression and emotional edge supporters expect.

There have been flashes of quality under Slot, but inconsistency has overshadowed progress. Defensive instability, uncertain tactical adjustments and disappointing domestic performances have all contributed to growing unease.

Murphy’s remarks reflect a wider feeling among sections of the fanbase that Liverpool risk drifting if they fail to act decisively in the coming years.

Slot Future Remains Under Spotlight

Despite criticism, Slot is still expected to remain in charge heading into next season. Liverpool’s owners appear reluctant to make another managerial change so quickly, particularly given the scale of transition following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

However, football rarely allows managers much breathing space at clubs of Liverpool’s stature.

If results fail to improve significantly, pressure around Slot could escalate rapidly. His current contract situation also leaves uncertainty hanging over the longer-term project at Anfield.

Murphy’s comments about Enrique arriving after potentially conquering Europe again only added further intrigue.

“Well, if he wins the Champions League again, what more can he do?” Murphy said. “He must be bored there. Playing in a Mickey Mouse league, where he wins every week. All he’s looking forward to is the Champions League. Must want more challenge, surely.”

Whether realistic or not, the idea of Enrique managing Liverpool is already gaining traction among supporters frustrated by the direction of the current side.

Liverpool Search Could Extend Beyond Enrique

Enrique is not the only name being linked with Liverpool’s future. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola continues to attract admirers for his intense pressing game and ability to improve players individually.

Meanwhile, Lens coach Pierre Sage has openly admitted Liverpool would represent a dream destination for him one day.

For now, though, Slot remains Liverpool manager and will be tasked with proving he can rebuild confidence after a bruising season. Recruitment, tactical refinement and dressing room belief will all need significant improvement if Liverpool are to compete properly at the top again.

Murphy’s intervention ensures the conversation surrounding Enrique and Slot is unlikely to fade anytime soon. At a club where expectations remain enormous, the demand for elite leadership never disappears for long.
