Liverpool take on Sunderland at Geodis Park this Saturday as Andoni Iraola continues preparations for the new season.

Liverpool approach this match during a period of transition under their new manager. They ended the 2025–26 Premier League season with a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Anfield. However, their form leading into the summer was mixed, including a heavy 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and another 4-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals. This fixture in Nashville represents their opening game of the pre-season schedule.

Liverpool team news

The Reds arrive for this pre-season clash with a significantly weakened squad, as injuries and delayed returns from international duty have limited Iraola’s options.

Several players remain sidelined, including long-term absentees Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, and Giovanni Leoni, who are still recovering from serious injuries sustained during the previous season.

Midfielders Wataru Endo and Stefan Bajcetic have resumed light training during the club’s tour in the United States, but they are not expected to feature heavily, with the coaching staff unwilling to take risks at this stage.

In addition, a number of senior internationals are unavailable due to extended breaks following recent tournaments.

Alexis Mac Allister, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak, Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz, and Victor Munoz will all miss this fixture.

With so many first-team players absent, Iraola is likely to turn to fringe squad members, youth academy talents, and new signings.

One player who could get his first taste of action is summer recruit Jérémy Jacquet, who may feature in central defence alongside more established names such as Joe Gomez and Dominik Szoboszlai.
