Liverpool’s dramatic 2 to 1 win over Everton provided plenty of talking points, but few stood out more than the performance of Curtis Jones. On the latest Media Matters podcast from Anfield Index, David Lynch and Dave Davis were unequivocal in their assessment of the midfielder’s display, while also addressing the growing uncertainty around his Liverpool future.
In a game defined by intensity rather than fluency, Jones delivered a performance full of control, bravery and tactical intelligence. Lynch did not hesitate in his verdict, stating, “I thought he was magnificent, to be honest.”
Backing that up with detail, he added, “Anyone who watched him there with a kind of clear head and judged his performance will know he was Liverpool’s man of the match for me.”
Operating in a hybrid role, Jones combined defensive diligence with composure in possession. Lynch highlighted the numbers, saying, “Twenty eight defensive contributions yesterday, the closest anybody got to that was Ibrahima Konate with fourteen.”
Beyond statistics, it was his mentality that stood out most in such a hostile environment. As Lynch put it, “What you need in a derby is composure… every time he’s just like little jinx to make space.”
The Merseyside derby rarely allows for calm decision making, yet Jones repeatedly found solutions under pressure. Lynch emphasised that quality, noting, “All you say after these games is you want bravery and I mean he showed bravery by the bucket load.”
Even when things did not come off perfectly, his willingness to take responsibility remained constant. Lynch added, “It didn’t come off every time, albeit most times actually.”
This willingness to take risks is often what separates functional performances from influential ones. Against Everton, Jones consistently drove Liverpool forward and helped them regain control after a difficult opening period.
Despite such an impressive display, the conversation quickly turned to Jones’ uncertain future at Liverpool FC. Reports suggest the club may be open to offers this summer, a scenario that left both contributors questioning the logic.
Davis summed up the concern, pointing out, “We seem to be in no way, you know, no haste, no passion to renew Curtis Jones’s contract and we all expect him to go.”
Lynch shared that unease, describing the situation as “the madness of letting a local lad who’s this good… letting him go this summer.”

Jones’ versatility and understanding of the club make him a valuable asset, particularly during a period of transition under Arne Slot. Lynch highlighted his adaptability, referring to him as “capable of playing in multiple positions.”
He went even further in his praise, stating, “I just think he’s a fantastic player, Curtis.”
Yet sentiment alone will not decide his future. With Liverpool expected to reshape parts of the squad, difficult calls are inevitable. Still, performances like this raise serious questions about whether Jones should be one of the players sacrificed.
The contrast between Jones’ display and the uncertainty surrounding his contract creates a compelling narrative. On one hand, he delivered arguably his best performance of the season in one of Liverpool’s biggest fixtures. On the other, his long term future remains unclear.
Lynch’s conclusion captured that tension perfectly. Reflecting on the idea of a summer exit, he said it would be “an absolute travesty.”
For Liverpool, this is no longer just a contractual issue. It is a decision that could define how the club balances loyalty, performance and long term planning under Arne Slot.
