Liverpool have been crowned Premier League champions for the second time after coming from behind to thump Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield on Sunday.
First-half goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo rendered Dominic Solanke's early header irrelevant and set the stage for Mohamed Salah to score his 27th Premier League strike of the season midway through the second period.
Destiny Udogie's own goal added the cherry to Liverpool's title cake, which was delivered on a gloriously sunny afternoon on Merseyside.
There was a feverish atmosphere in and around Anfield in the lead-up to the game, with Liverpool knowing that just a solitary point would be enough to get them over the line after recent slip-ups from title rivals Arsenal. Fans lined the streets with scarves, banners and set off red-smoke flares as they welcomed the players to the ground on the team coach – thousands of supporters turned up not having a matchday ticket just to take in the atmosphere and be a part of the celebrations.
A thunderous rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' then blared around Anfield as the teams completed their final preparations, with many hoping to celebrate a Premier League title win in the flesh for the first time – the club's previous success under Jurgen Klopp played out behind closed doors because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Solanke threatened to dampen the mood after rising highest to plant a firm header past a motionless Alisson from James Maddison's corner, but Liverpool, who had collected 19 points from losing positions prior to the game, roared back immediately to level through Diaz.
Initially, the offside flag was raised against Dominik Szoboszlai, but the Premier League's new semi-automated offside technology quickly showed that Kevin Danso's shoulder had played the Hungarian onside. That meant the attacking midfielder's first-time square ball to Diaz counted – the 28-year-old beating the retreating Danso to turn home from close range.
Tottenham were the architects of their own downfall for the second. On-loan forward Mathys Tel played a strange ball across the edge of his own penalty area and that allowed Ryan Gravenberch to get his body in front of Archie Gray, which in turn led to the ball falling to the feet of Mac Allister. The Argentine World Cup winner quickly shifted the ball to his left foot before rifling an unstoppable shot past Vicario into the top corner.
With the stadium bouncing, Gakpo scored Liverpool's third after more ponderous Spurs defending, though his quick footwork and precise finish was perhaps no surprise given his superb individual season.
Salah added the fourth after a devastating counter-attack led by the energetic Szoboszlai, with Udogie turning into his own net minutes later when trying to prevent the ball from reaching the Egyptian once more.
