Arne Slot reveals new update on Mohamed Salah ahead of Saturday lunchtime trip to the Amex
Liverpool will be without Mohamed Salah for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Brighton.
Salah was restored to Arne Slot’s starting XI against Galatasaray on Wednesday and made amends for missing a first-half penalty by completing the scoring in a 4-0 win at Anfield, also registering an assist for Hugo Ekitike.
However, the one negative from an otherwise perfect night for the Reds, who will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals, was Salah requesting to be substituted late in the second half after picking up a knock.
Slot has confirmed that Salah will be absent against Brighton and for Egypt’s upcoming friendlies with Saudi Arabia and Spain.
“Indeed, [it's] unusual,” the Liverpool boss said at Friday’s pre-match press conference. “As a result of that I think you can expect the outcome. So, [he's] not available for tomorrow.
“The good thing for Liverpool and for us is that we go to an international break. The bad thing for Egypt is that he can't go there.
“We are hoping also with what Mo has shown in the past that he can recover faster than other players might in similar situations because he takes such good care of his body. History has shown that he can be earlier back than some others.
“But it's only two weeks when we go again so let's hope in that period of time he can be back.”
With Salah not fit, Jeremie Frimpong is an option to play further forward on the right wing, thus reprising his role from the 1-1 draw against Tottenham last weekend.
Though that could mean Dominik Szoboszlai is asked to fill in at right-back once again despite impressing in his more natural No10 role in the win over Galatasaray.
Joe Gomez was an unused substitute on Wednesday and Slot has confirmed that he is not ready to start against Brighton.
“Joe was on the bench but he wasn't able to come in,” he said. “We tried to postpone it as far as we could.
“He already told me before the start of the game he didn't feel good. I said, 'OK, let's wait to half-time [and] a miracle can happen - we might need you in extra time.'
“He might be available tomorrow but definitely not to start.”
A third game in the space of six days, not to mention the quick turnaround after Galatasaray, could result in Slot freshening up his team where necessary.
Andy Robertson, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo are all options to come into the side, while Rio Ngumoha may have to settle for a place on the bench despite being Liverpool’s best attacker against Spurs.
Alexander Isak is not ready to return yet, while Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni are all long-term absentees.
Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Gakpo, Szoboszlai, Wirtz; Ekitike
Injured: Isak, Leoni, Bradley, Endo, Salah
