Reds set to be without star summer signing
The Reds were lucky to get away with a point as they hosted Leeds on Thursday after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late would-be winner was ruled out for a narrow offside.
Wirtz started on the left flank at Anfield but was hooked shortly after the hour mark, and, speaking at full-time, Slot revealed the German had been playing through a minor hamstring injury.
“Florian only trained once this week because two days after the game, he felt his hamstring still a bit,” the Dutchman explained.
It is not all bad news for Liverpool, though, as fit-again Cody Gakpo made a long-awaited comeback in Wirtz’s place.
Should Slot opt to rest Wirtz in west London, then, his countryman Gakpo will be the obvious first-choice to stand in on the left wing.
Alexander Isak’s ongoing injury woes mean Hugo Ektiike will continue at centre-forward, despite missing a presentable chance late on against Leeds last time out.
There may be rotation in defence, too. Slot does not have a huge amount of options in defence due to injuries to Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, but does have Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong at his disposal.
Slot opted for Andy Robertson and Conor Bradley against Leeds as Frimpong lined up on the wing, deputising AFCON-bound Mohamed Salah.
Kerkez, though, could hand Robertson a rest, while Frimpong dropping back into defence could allow space for Alexis Mac Allister to return to the starting line-up. Dominik Szoboszlai may shift out wide to allow the Argentine to take up the No10 mantle.
Alisson, Ibrahima Konate, and Virgil van Dijk will form the usual core of the backline.
Liverpool predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Jones; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Gakpo; Ekitike
Injured: Leoni, Isak, Endo, Gomez
Unavailable: Salah (AFCON)
