Liverpool’s journey towards silverware continues with the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on the horizon. Ahead of the Wembley showdown, the Premier League has confirmed the match officials, with an experienced referee in charge for the big occasion.
Liverpool’s clash with Newcastle on March 16 will see John Brooks take the whistle at Wembley. The Leicestershire-born official last oversaw a Liverpool game in October, a relatively uneventful 2-1 win over Chelsea.
Brooks will be assisted by Eddie Smart and Nick Greenhalgh, with Darren England acting as the fourth official. Meanwhile, Stuart Attwell has been assigned as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), supported by Sian Massey-Ellis.
Carabao Cup Final Officials:
This appointment ensures Liverpool’s League Cup final will be overseen by a referee familiar with high-stakes encounters. Given the scrutiny officiating decisions face, particularly involving Liverpool this season, all eyes will be on Brooks to manage the occasion smoothly.
Before their trip to Wembley, Liverpool face Southampton in the Premier League, with a relatively new official in charge. Lewis Smith, who refereed an FA Cup tie involving Accrington Stanley earlier this season, will take charge of his first Liverpool match in the league.
Smith is making just his fifth top-flight appearance, and it remains to be seen how he handles the pressures of officiating at Anfield. He will be assisted by Mat Wilkes and Marc Perry, while Tony Harrington has been named as the fourth official. In Stockley Park, Matt Donohue will oversee VAR duties, with Derek Eaton assisting.
Liverpool vs. Southampton Officials:
With Liverpool vying for success on multiple fronts, officiating decisions will undoubtedly come under the microscope. Whether it’s Wembley or Anfield, the Reds will hope for a smooth and controversy-free handling of these crucial fixtures.
