Georgia Brougham’s late header gave London City Lionesses a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane this afternoon.

The hosts worked extremely hard over the course of the 90 minutes and made life difficult for The Pride, however, London City Lionesses eventually made the breakthough when Brougham headed in from a free-kick late in the game.

The first half was competitive with both sides going on the attack in search of goals. London City Lionesses went the closest in the early stages. Home keeper Sian Rogers had to be alert to deny both Kosovare Asllani and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah before the latter saw a header come back off the bar.

Sheffield United’s best chance of the opening 45 minutes fell the way of Ellen Molloy. She was gifted possession by visiting keeper Emily Orman 35 yards from goal but she couldn’t find the back of an unguarded net.

London City Lionesses twice went close at the start of the second period. Isobel Goodwin thumped a shot off the crossbar before Rogers pulled off an excellent point-blank save to deny Boye-Hlorkah.

To their credit, Sheffield United worked hard throughout and they almost found a winner 12 minutes from time but Orman pushed Ella Kinzett’s looping effort to safety at the back post.

The deadlock was finally broken six minutes from time. London City Lionesses were awarded a free-kick on the right and Brougham met the ball with her head and found the far corner of the net.

London City Lionesses had chances to extend their lead but Charlène Meyong and Asllani were denied by Rogers as the game ended 1-0.

Both sides are back in Barclays Women’s Championship action again next weekend. Sheffield United travel to Portsmouth while London City Lionesses play host to Birmingham City.
