„Longer story“: Bayern boss gives update on Upamecano poker | OneFootball

FC Bayern is continuing to plan for the future. Following the contract extension of coach Vincent Kompany, the focus is now also on centre-back Dayot Upamecano. Sporting director Christoph Freund commented on the ongoing talks before the 3-0 win in Gladbach.

Dayot Upamecano has once again become a permanent fixture in the Bayern defence under Vincent Kompany. The French defender has impressed with his stability, strength in tackles and a new calmness in his build-up play. No wonder that Munich want to extend the 26-year-old’s contract, which runs until 2026, on a long-term basis.

In an interview with Sky, Christoph Freund explained the current status of the negotiations: „It’s a long story with Upa, but we’re in talks. Upa feels extremely comfortable, he is also performing well, so we are in talks and are very positive.“

Freund emphasised that the talks are at an early but constructive stage. The Frenchman himself is said to be very interested in continuing his future at FC Bayern. Under Kompany, he has once again established himself as an important leading player in defence – he was also one of the key figures in the win in Mönchengladbach.

After the surprisingly quick extension of Vincent Kompany’s contract until 2029, which was finalised within a few days, Bayern fans are now hoping for a similar dynamic with Upamecano. But Freund put the brakes on cautious expectations: „Yes, it happened quickly with Kompany. As we said, it was done within three or four days. That was extraordinary – but not always so easy to realise.“

The talks with Upamecano are more complex, partly because the player’s side has formulated very demanding financial requirements.
