Paris Saint-Germain created plenty of scoring chances but couldn’t capitalize in a 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 matchup.

PSG controlled much of the first half, outshooting Liverpool 12-1, but they couldn’t find the breakthrough. Luis Enrique’s side thought they had taken the lead when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curled a shot into the top-left corner, but VAR ruled him offside by the slimmest of margins.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was instrumental in keeping PSG off the scoresheet, making four saves in the first half and adding five more after the break. Despite PSG’s continued pressure, it was the visitors who struck late.

In the 87th minute, Alisson launched a long ball to Darwin Nunez, who won a duel and set up substitute Harvey Elliott. The young midfielder kept his composure and slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma to give Liverpool the advantage heading into the second leg.

Following the match, PSG manager Luis Enrique spoke with Canal+ and used two words to describe the 1-0 defeat knowing that the Parisians had plenty of scoring chances to have a lead heading into the second leg.

“It’s very unfair,” Enrique said (h/t Culture PSG). “It was a very complete match from us, maybe our most complete match in the Champions League. In the first half, the expected goals were completely in our favor. They had one shot and scored. Their best player was Alisson, the goalkeeper.

“It’s a bit strange, but I feel very proud of my team, the players, and the fans. The atmosphere was wonderful, but football is sometimes unfair. You have to score. We will take this in a positive way and focus on the second leg in Liverpool.”
