Luis Enrique Faces Suspension After Club World Cup Final Incident vs Chelsea
Luis Enrique manager of Paris Saint Germain is at risk of receiving lengthy suspension after incident in the 2025 FIFA Club World cup final against Chelsea.
The French champions entered the final as favorites but were outclassed by Chelsea suffering 3 - 0 defeat at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night.
Tensions flared at full time when Enrique became involved in heated altercation with Chelsea striker Joao Pedro. Cameras captured the Spanish coach placing his hand on Pedro’s face causing the Brazilian to fall to the ground.
Speaking after the match , Enrique admitted:
"I was stupid. He stood there, touched me slightly, then threw himself on the ground. I only wanted to separate the players , things were getting tense. But it wasn’t the right way to end the night"
According to Mundo Deportivo, FIFA's now reviewing the incident. The match coordinator’s report'll play decisive role in determining whether disciplinary action is taken.
Under Article 2, Chapter II of FIFA's Disciplinary Code , any form of physical aggression including pushing, hitting, elbowing, or slapping can lead to minimum 3 match ban if the offender isn't part of the officiating crew.
Should the sanction be imposed, Enrique would miss the Super cup final between PSG & Tottenham Hotspur scheduled for 13 Aug. The suspension could also impact the start of PSG’s domestic or European campaign.
